I was listening to a Podcast that featured Jeff Housenbold (CEO, Shutterfly), speaking to Stanford students. He listed out the following advice for professional success - although the list looks kind of obvious and no different from so many other such lists, it really make a lot of sense - especially the way he built up on those points in his lecture.
(btw, the reason so many of these lists look so similar could be that they actually work !! :)
1. Have a Rabbi - someone with a propensity for mentorship - Selfish Unselfishness - symbiotic relationship - enough career distance from you
2. Do what really interests you
3. Go where the money is made in the organization
4. Solve your boss's and boss's boss's problems
5. Go where there is tremendous growth / disruption / disintermediation / complete turnaround
6. Don't worry about titles, particularly in the early stages of your career - be a sponge - go around people that you can learn from
7. Find a culture that fits your values - politics can possibly crush you
8. Success is driven by putting yourself in the way of opportunities enough times that you get lucky!
9. Delegate - build teams - step back and find people that can tell you like it is
10. It's not about the money - life is really short - create balance in life.
Really useful advice - impressive bio too...
